Word Quiz

A Grove of Trees - Answers

1. Worshipping golden calves (or any other non-deity symbol). People sometimes idolize money, fame, power, or a person (e.g., a movie star, sports hero, religious or political leader).

2. Fanatical devotion. Because zealots are guided more by emotion than reason, they are hard to dissuade, and can cause much trouble in the world.

3. Slavery—a helot is a slave. Some ants practice helotry, capturing and enslaving other ants.

4. Behind a horse. A swingletree (also called whiffletree or singletree) is the crossbar that is fastened to the horse’s harness and to the vehicle or implement that the horse is pulling.

5. A show-offy exhibit of learning (also, persnickity attention to details). He may be smart, but I wish his lectures didn’t sound so pedantic.
