1. Rats and lice (and anything else that’s disgusting, annoying, or predatory—like coyotes, weasels, criminals). The word vermin, which comes from the Latin term for worm, is also the source of vermicelli—pasta in long, thin strands.

2. Make you barf a bit. A medicine made from the dried roots of the ipecac shrub, it’s used to induce vomiting, as in some cases of poisoning or drug overdose.

3. A cloth used for ribbon. Several of the Easter bonnets sported colorful ribbons made of grosgrain, a closely woven silk or rayon fabric with tiny ribs.

4. Swing back and forth, waver. Candidates often accuse their opponents of “waffling”—of oscillating, wavering back and forth.

5. To assign or demote, as to a group or class (it can also mean to refer for a decision, opinion, etc.). He had been a first-string poet in high school, but at the university he was relegated to the scrub team, which wrote only doggerel.
