1. Cry out, shout (especially in protest). The voters vociferated angrily when they learned about the careless counting of the ballots.

2. Clarify, explain. The root of the word elucidate is luc—meaning light—so to elucidate is to figuratively throw light on.

3. To branch out. What began as a simple search for one word soon ramified into a chain of searches, and a half-hour later she was still leafing through her dictionary, following new leads about related terms.

4. Split into parts, often mutually hostile and ineffectual groups. Many people feared that an invasion of Iraq would balkanize the country, dividing the people into distrustful, sometimes warring, groups.

5. Polish till shiny. He simonized his sister’s car in exchange for driving privileges. (Simonize is a trademarked auto polish.)
