Coming to TERMS - Answers

1. A part of the brain. The thalamus, in the back part of the forebrain, relays sensory messages to the cerebral cortex.

2. Sedative, anesthetic. Epidural is short for epidural anesthesia, involving injection of anesthetic into a space between vertabrae.

3. Angry, wild. He was rabid with anger when he heard the news. (It can also mean infected with the disease rabies—a dog with rabies is said to be a “mad dog.”)

4. Devil. Doctor Faust, in the oft-told legend, bartered his soul to Mephistopheles, one of the chief devils in medieval demonology.

5. A professor’s paid leave (or a cartoonist’s, musician’s, etc.) After six years of teaching, she was granted a sabbatical to do research on professors’ perks.
