Word Quiz

PADRE - Answers

1. A false (pseudo) foot (pod). The amoeba travels by extending a pseudopod, then sort of oozing itself into it—a little like collapsing slowly into your sock.

2. Skillful—mentally or (especially) physically. The adroit pianist performed the polonaise perfectly.

3. Crown or (often bejeweled) headband. Diana’s diadem was decidedly decorous.

4. Shining, gleaming, radiant. The fireflies, foxfire, and reflections of the stars made the wetlands radiantly refulgent.

5. Flattened plants. The horticulturist taught us to train the shrubs and fruit trees to grow flat against the wall. (The trellis, the plants, and the practice may all be referred to as espalier.)
