1. It’s a sign of rank, a stripe sort of like a shallow vee (sometimes inverted). The newly promoted corporal smiled as he sewed the chevrons on his sleeve.

2. Dapper means neatly or stylishly dressed. One line from an old song has something about “A gentleman, dapper,” who stepped out to the rescue.

3. A fungus that affects wheat and other grains. Although sometimes costly to farmers, ergot is an important source of medicines.

4. Easily done or accomplished. Winning the scrabble match was a facile feat for him. (It can also mean overly simple, done without planning or thought—he was too quick to reply, giving facile, simplistic answers.)

5. Fool, trick, deceive, scam. The clever carnival cardsharp gulled the greedy game-players.
