Word Quiz

A Mess of S’s - Answers

1. Earliest, first (from a Latin term meaning “seed,” or “source.”) Wagner’s experiment turned out to be seminal in the evolution of operatic performances.

2. The term means detective (or sometimes just policeman). Viper vowed vengeance on the shamus who had shamed him.

3. A grave, or tomb. The priest said that the sepulcher contained the remains of a saint.

4. Flesh-ripping. His sarcastic remarks were sometimes so vicious that if they didn’t literally cut the flesh, they sure sliced up some self-esteem.

5. Caviar, or roe (fish eggs). The fishermen fed the sturgeon to their families, but only after saving the caviar for sale to upscale restaurants.
