Word Quiz

OBAMA - Answers

1. An ossuary (from Latin os, bone) would contain bones of the dead. Political adversaries not only search for skeletons in the closet, but they also look for ancient bones in the ossuary.

2. A barrister (from Middle English barre, bar) is a lawyer (one admitted to the bar). In some English-speaking countries, barristers are those lawyers admitted to plead at the bar (as in “Please gimme another drink”). Sorry.

3. Adulation (from Latin through Old French and Middle English) means excessive flattery or admiration. The true statesman wants honest recognition, not adulation.

4. Macramé (from Arabic migrama—embroidered coverlet—through Turkish, Italian, and French) would apply to a hand-knotted wall hanging. In the macramé class, they fashioned webbing of hand-knotted cord and yarn into garments and purses.

5. Approbation (from Latin through Old French) means strong approval. They expected his inaugural speech to win near-unanimous approbation
