A Handful of VERBS - Answers

1. To vilify (from Latin vilificare, to hold cheap or base) is to say bad things about, to malign or slander. Those who have no good ideas or plans themselves may try to vilify those who do.

2. To educe (from Latin ex, out, and ducere, to lead) is to bring out, draw forth. A good teacher will educe a student’s latent talent.

3. You’d rusticate in a country place (it comes from Latin rusticari—to live in the country). After the jam-packed D.C. streets during the inauguration, they were ready to get out of town and rusticate for a while.

4. To bevel is to cut at a slant (possibly from Old French baivel, to gape or yawn). The carpenter bevelled the end of the board so it would fit into the slot.

5. To satirize is to attack with irony, sarcasm, or ridicule. Swift considered it difficult to satirize a man of distinguished vices.
