Word Quiz

LABOR Day - Answers

1. Twisting and turning. A labyrinth is a maze, a series of twisting and interconnected tunnels, part of the inner ear, or anything tangled, twisted, complex.

2. An ampersand. The name comes from “and per se and,” which means (roughly) “the sign itself means ‘and.’ ”

3. Soft coal. The mine produced bituminous coal, which releases more smoke and tar than the harder anthracite variety.

4. Six geese a-laying. Oviparous means egg-laying—like most birds, turtles, and (I think) the duck-billed platypus.

5. Coarse, crude humor. It comes from French satirist François Rabelais, whose work was characterized by coarse humor and keen satire.
