1. Levity (from Latin levitas—lightness, frivolity) is inappropriate humor or frivolity, lacking the seriousness an occasion calls for. Some people were embarrassed by the undue levity of several seniors at graduation.

2. Necrophobia is a strong fear of croaking (i.e., dying), or things related to death. Another word for necrophobia is thanatophobia.

3. Pastoral (from the Latin for sheep or shepherd) would most likely refer to the simple country life. Ms. Mallison told her class that pastoral stories are about shepherds who discuss art, life and love—everything except the care and feeding of sheep.

4. It means ordinary civilian clothes. Because of the anti-military attitudes of some local people, the officers were ordered to wear mufti when going off-post. (It also means an interpreter of Muslim religious law.)

5. Osage is the name of an American Indian people, as well as a river. The Osage, who were Siouan, used to live in Missouri.
