SPOOK - Answers

1. A specter is a visible but insubstantial spirit or ghost. The specter of Hamlet’s father sorely troubled the prince.

2. A puerile remark is childish, immature. (It can also refer to behavior, etc.) His puerile questions annoyed the speaker and the others in the audience. (The word comes from Latin puerilis, boyish.)

3. Ornithology (from Greek ornis, bird) is the study of birds. The ornithologist taught general biology, but his specialty was the migratory patterns of birds.

4. Can’t see through it. Opaque (from Latin opācus, shaded, via Middle English) means impenetrable by light. (It also means hard to follow, as an explanation.)

5. A kestrel (from Middle English castrell) is a small falcon. The ornithologists watched the kestrel as it hovered in the air, its head facing into the breeze.
