Word Quiz

DEAN’s List - Answers

1. A dirge is a mournful song. (It’s from Latin for direct, the first word in part of the Latin song of the dead.) Every time I talk with him, I hear some kind of dirge about what a tough life he has.

2. Exculpate means to free from guilt or blame. (It’s from Latin exculpātus, freed from blame.) Chris was exculpated from the charge of plagiarism from Wikipedia after it was found that he had written the entry himself.

3. Amniocentesis involves a sample of bodily fluid. As a part of the genetic testing, the OBGYN inserted a needle to draw a sample of the fluid surrounding the embryo. (It’s from Greek amnos—the sac in which the embryo is suspended—and kentein—to prick.)

4. A nephrologist (from Greek nephros, kidney) is a physician who specializes in care and treatment of kidneys.

5. A slender girl, or young woman. “My but you’ve lost weight; you look like a sylph.” (The word apparently comes from Latin silva, forest, and Greek nymphe, nymph.)
