Word Quiz

All V’s - Answers

1. A small rodent (maybe from Norse vullmus, meaning fieldmouse). The kestrels’ ability to detect infra-red light helped them spot the urine trails of voles, their favorite prey.

2. Vulpine means foxlike (from Latin vulpinus, fox). The beggar’s thin chin and pointy ears gave him a vulpine appearance.

3. The velociraptor was a swift little carnivorous dinosaur. Jurassic Park featured vicious velociraptors. (The term comes from Latin velocitas, speed, and raptor, one who takes by force.)

4. A voluble person is talkative. (It’s from Latin volubilis—turning, flowing.) He’s a voluble spokesman for our cause, which may make him valuable to our party.

5. A gut feeling (from Latin viscera, internal organs). Viscera was used figuratively in art criticism during the 1940’s—Reactions to the play were more visceral than cerebral.
