Word Quiz

NOUNS - Answers

1. Under or below. The nether world (hell) is said to lie below the earth’s surface; the nether tip of the crescent moon is at the bottom. (It’s from Old English neothera, down.)

2. An artist’s life work. She said we should judge a writer, painter, or composer not by the person’s morals, but by the person’s oeuvre.

3. The term (no longer widely used in the sciences) referred to any mammal with hoofs (or hooves, if you prefer). The attempt to define a specific group of animals as ungulates fell into disrepute. (It’s from Latin ungulatus, having claws or hoofs.)

4. A venerable and wise old man. The word comes from classical mythology—Nestor was the wise old counselor in the Iliad. Young sailors would do well to find a helpful old nestor to show them the ropes.

5. A sepulchre (from Latin stem sepul, to bury) is a tomb or grave. The children thought they heard sepulchral noises coming from the deserted old house.
