1. A dotty painting. To stipple (from Dutch stippen, to speckle) means to draw, paint, or engrave in dots or short strokes.

2. An asteroid (from Greek asteroeidēs, starlike—aster means star, -oid means like) is a small celestial body that orbits the sun, mostly between Mars and Jupiter.

3. Imbue means to inspire or influence strongly—the militants were imbued with the spirit of their messianic leader. It’s from Latin imbuere, to moisten or stain.

4. A leitmotif (from German leiten, to lead) is a recurring phrase associated with a particular person, situation, etc., in a musical drama.

5. A stone coffin. The word sarcophagus comes from Greek terms meaning flesh-eating, because the first such coffins were of limestone, which disintegrated the contents.
