Word Quiz

PULSE - Answers

1. Pulses (from Latin puls, pottage) are edible seeds of certain leguminous plants, as beans, peas, and lentils. The nurse took our temperatures, and the pantry mice took our pulses.

2. Upsilon is the name of the 20th letter of the Greek alphabet. It’s from Greek (surprise) y psilon, meaning simple u (to distinguish it from a couple of digraphs, or two-letter elements, pronounced the same way).

3. Lakes (from Greek limne, lake, and -ology, study of). The limnologist and the ornithologist looked for drakes on the lakes.

4. Supple (from Middle English souple, flexible) means flexible, pliable, compliant. The aging dance teacher is not as supple as he once was.

5. :-)The sideways smiley-face is an example of an emoticon. The term was coined in the 1980’s, from emotion and icon.
