Too Much TURKY - Answers

1. It’s a kind of tree found in moist forests or swamps of North America. The judge’s bench and gavel were both made from the fine-textured wood of the tupelo. (Origin: Creek topilwa, swamp tree)

2. They have hooves on their feet (or did, before their former order, Ungulata, meaning animals with hooves, was divided into two groups, odd-toed and even-toed). From Latin ungulatus, hoof, nail, talon.

3. Unruly, hard to control. Chris was a recalcitrant child, always getting demerits or detentions in school. (Latin recalcitrāre, to kick back)

4. In a bowling alley. A kegler (from German kegeln, to bowl) is, as you might expect, someone who bowls.

5. A Greek “i,” or “i griega” (pronounced ee-gree-A-guh). The etymology? We think it probably comes from Spanish.
