Word Quiz

OL SOL - Answers

1. An odalisk (from Turkish odalik, chambermaid) is a female slave, a member of a harem.

2. A loblolly is a kind of pine tree that grows well in swamps or wet bottomlands. The term also (especially in the Southern U.S.) means mire or mudhole—thus the name for the tree.

3. December 21 or so (for the winter solstice), and around June 21 (for the summer solstice). At either solstice (from Latin sol, sun, and sistere, to make stand), the sun is farthest from the celestial equator (an outward projection of the Earth’s equator).

4. Ofay (of uncertain origin), often considered disparaging, is a slang term for a white person.

5. To lactate (Latin lac, milk) is to produce milk. The camel’s a mammal, so its fate is to lactate.
