1. A neutrino (from Italian neutro, neuter) is an electrically neutral subatomic particle. Millions of neutrinos produced by the sun pass through your body every second.

2. To efface (from Latin ex, out, and face) is to wipe out, to make less distinct. Although highly talented, she was shy and self-effacing.

3. A wen (from Old English wenn, wart) is a harmless cyst on the skin, especially on the face or scalp.

4. A yarmulke (from Yiddish yarmulke) is a skullcap worn by some Jewish men, especially during study or prayer.

5. To rifle (from Old French rifler, to scratch or groove) is to cut spiral grooves in something—the grooves inside a gun barrel are called rifles. Rifle can also mean a rifled shoulder firearm, or to search through, steal, or plunder.
