HASTE - Answers

1. Helical means spiral shaped (from the Latin term for spiral). Crick and Watson realized that a strand of DNA must look like a ladder twisted into a helical shape—a double helix.

2. Adirondacks are mountains and chairs (also members of an Algonquin group). After our hikes, we often sat on the deck in our Adirondack chairs to enjoy the beauty and a beverage.

3. Super-sweet (from the Latin term for sugar). Saccharin is a chemical compound, usually in powder form, said to be 500 times as sweet as sugar.

4. A trepan is a surgical tool (from the Greek term for borer). The surgeon used a trepan to remove a round core of bone from the skull. (The term trepan is also used to mean a mischievous trickster, or a trick or trap.)

5. Effete means powerless, worn out (from Latin effeta, exhausted). The candidate liked to refer to his academic critics as effete intellectuals.
