Word Quiz

CODES - Answers

1. A codex is a book—usually an ancient classic, the Scriptures, or a book of laws. The word codex comes from Latin term for tree-trunk, because the books were originally made from wooden tablets fastened together.

2. Occult means hidden (from the Latin for conceal). Only after the acolytes completed the initiation rituals were they taught the occult principles of the clan.

3. De rigueur means necessary, needed. (It’s from a French term literally meaning "of strictness," but we use it to mean required by convention or fashion.) Among elite onomatomaniacs, it is considered de rigueur to dress formally before taking the word quiz.

4. An epicurean would enjoy a banquet or orgy. The word comes from Epicurus, the Greek philosopher who taught that the world is a random collection of atoms, and that pleasure should be our highest goal.

5. Growing trees (the word comes from the same Latin term that gives us sylvan, related to woods). Professor Goddard was a noted silviculturist and forest geneticist who greatly increased the output of our pine forests.
