Word Quiz

SALUD! - Answers

1. A saturnalia is a festive celebration (from the ancient Roman festival of the god Saturn). This year, let’s have a sane and sensible New-Year’s party, not an unrestrained saturnalia.

2. Antimony is a silvery metallic element used in alloys and medicines. It’s used in battery plates and in flame-proofing materials.

3. Talking. Litotes (from Greek for plain, simple) means understatement, especially the affirming of something by denying its opposite—“This is no easy quiz you’re asking me to take,” or “She wasn’t entirely without sex appeal.”

4. The youngest boy. Ultimogeniture (from Latin for last born) is the practice of having the youngest son inherit the estate of the parents.

5. Don’t hear too well (the word comes from two Greek terms: dactyl [finger] and logy [speech]). The boys learned dactylology from their hearing-impaired friend, then used it to exchange information during pop-quizzes.
